How to connect Tesla Backup Gateway site meter with Reduxi controller
Connect the site meter of the Tesla Backup Gateway to the Reduxi Controller.
1 Technical documentation
Find the instructions to connect and configure the Backup Gateway on the manufacturer web page.
- Tesla Energy support – Support pages of the manufacturer.
- Connecting to Tesla Gateway – How the Gateway and Powerwall connect to the network.
- About Energy Metering – Tesla Energy Library: site and solar metering in the Backup Gateway 2 installation manual.
- Site and Solar Metering for Backup Gateway 2 – Tesla Energy Library: which meters measure the site.
2 Required equipment
- Tesla Backup Gateway with the site meter
- Reduxi Controller
- IP address of the Gateway in the local network
- Username and password of the Gateway (see How to add Battery Tesla Backup Gateway)
- Laptop or tablet with internet access to configure the device in Reduxi
3 Site meter of the Backup Gateway
The Reduxi Controller reads the site meter of the Tesla Backup Gateway. The site meter shows the net power flow to and from the site from the grid's perspective.
- The site meter is installed upstream of all solar production, Powerwalls and loads.
- The Internal Primary Meter (Meter X) of the Gateway 2 measures site consumption when the grid connection is at the Supply terminals.
- If loads or solar are upstream of the Supply terminals, a Neurio Remote Energy Meter can meter the grid connection point instead.

5 Add the site meter to Reduxi
Use these steps to add a new energy meter or to edit an existing one.
5.1 Basic settings
Log in to the Reduxi Configurator via the browser (see Point 4). Click + Add device.
In the first step, enter the basic settings of the device: device type, type and a name of your choice.
5.2 Communication settings
Select the communication channel. Then enter the device configuration:
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| IP | IP address of the Tesla Gateway (see How to add Battery Tesla Backup Gateway) |
| Username and password | See How to add Battery Tesla Backup Gateway. There, Tesla names the email of your Tesla account as the username. For the first sign-in, the password is the last five characters of the Gateway password. |
5.3 Advanced settings
Enter and choose the advanced settings.
5.4 Test communication
Click Test communication at the bottom of the wizard. It reads the Tesla Backup Gateway site meter once and saves nothing. If the test succeeds, click Done: only Done creates the device.

Port *: 502, with button 'Test port'. Modbus unit ID *: 1. Buttons at the bottom: Back (left), Test communication and Done (right). The Done button is marked with a cyan box.
6 Check the readings
6.1 Last measurements
After communication is established, check the values under Devices in the Reduxi Configurator.
6.2 Enable control by Reduxi
Set the control type of the device as required. For strategies, see Strategies for Reduxi controller.
✓ Summary
Preparation (Points 1–2): Find the Tesla documentation. Prepare the Gateway IP address, the login data and the Reduxi Controller.
Backup Gateway (Point 3): The site meter shows the net power flow to and from the site. It sits upstream of solar, Powerwalls and loads.
Add to Reduxi (Points 4–5): Log in to the Reduxi Configurator, add the energy meter, enter IP, username and password, and test communication.
Go live (Point 6): Check the readings and set the control type.
→ Common issues
| Issue | Solution |
|---|---|
| Test communication fails | Check the IP address, the username and the password of the Gateway. See How to add Battery Tesla Backup Gateway. |
| Open configurator does not open or stays empty | The tunnel is not active yet. Wait about 30 seconds and check that the controller is online. |
Login with admin is rejected |
The password was changed during installation. Ask the installer. The Reduxi account password does not work here. |
reduxi.local does not load |
Your device is not in the same network as the controller. Use the IP address or the tunnel connection. |
| Communication test fails, device shows offline | Check reachability, IP address / port / unit ID, and that the protocol is enabled on the device. |
