Network settings
Check how the controller is connected and set up its Ethernet, Wi-Fi and mobile connections, DNS, proxy and failover.
→ Overview
The Network page shows how the controller is connected right now and holds the settings of every network interface: the Ethernet ports, Wi-Fi, the mobile modem, the DNS servers, an HTTP proxy and network redundancy (failover between connections).
The tabs you see depend on the hardware. Controllers with two Ethernet ports show WAN and LAN; controllers with one port show only LAN. The Mobile tab appears only when a mobile module is fitted.
Save stores all tabs at once. About 4 seconds later the controller takes all its interfaces down and brings them up again with the new settings. Every connection drops for a few seconds: your Configurator session, the cloud connection, remote access, Open VPN and Modbus TCP or other network devices. The controller does not reboot. There is no automatic rollback. A wrong static address, netmask or gateway, or a wrong Wi-Fi network, can make the controller unreachable. Before you save, make sure you can reach the controller another way: on site, over a second interface, or through the emergency Wi-Fi hotspot (section below).
1 Check the connection
| Row | What it shows |
|---|---|
| WAN - IP, WAN - Netmask | Address of the first Ethernet port. Called LAN - IP and LAN - Netmask on controllers with one Ethernet port. |
| LAN - IP, LAN - Netmask | Address of the second Ethernet port (controllers with two ports). |
| Wireless IP, Wireless Netmask | Address of the Wi-Fi interface. Empty when Wi-Fi is off or not connected. |
| Mobile IP, Mobile Netmask | Address of the mobile connection. Shown only with a mobile module. |
| Proxy server | HTTP proxy in use, as host:port. Empty = no proxy. |
| Default route | Gateway the controller uses to reach the internet. |
| Active connection | Connection the controller uses now: WAN, LAN, Wi-Fi or Mobile. UNKNOWN when it cannot be determined. |
| Internet connection | Green tick: the controller reached the Reduxi server within 5 seconds. Red: it did not. Click the refresh icon to test again. |
A green dot next to WAN or LAN means a cable is plugged in and the port has a link.
2 Change the network settings
For a STATIC interface, IP and Netmask must be valid IPv4 addresses, and Gateway must be empty or a valid address. DNS servers and the redundancy Ping IP must be valid addresses too. Otherwise the controller refuses the whole page and shows an error; nothing is changed.
WAN and LAN (Ethernet)
Controllers with two Ethernet ports show a WAN tab (the port towards the internet router) and a LAN tab (the port towards the devices). A green dot next to a tab name marks the connection that is currently active.
| Field | What it does | Unit / default |
|---|---|---|
| Type | DHCP: the controller gets its address from the router. STATIC: you enter the address yourself. | WAN: DHCP · LAN (second port): STATIC |
| IP | Static address of the port. Shown with STATIC only. | IPv4 · LAN default 10.100.100.50 |
| Netmask | Netmask of the static address. Shown with STATIC only. | IPv4 · LAN default 255.255.255.0 |
| Gateway | Router address for this port. Shown with STATIC only. Leave empty for a local network without internet access. | IPv4 · empty |
| Network isolation | Active: the controller does not pass traffic between this network and its other networks or the internet. You can still reach the controller itself from this network. Inactive: traffic may be routed through the controller. | Active |
The controller does not hand out addresses on its Ethernet ports. To connect a laptop directly to a port set to STATIC, give the laptop a free address in the same subnet, for example 10.100.100.51 with netmask 255.255.255.0 for the default LAN address.
- A static IP outside the site's subnet, a wrong netmask or a missing gateway makes the controller unreachable from the site network and cuts it off from the cloud.
- Turning Network isolation off lets devices on one network reach another network, for example the internet, through the controller. Only turn it off when the site needs the controller as a router and the site's IT agrees.
Wi-Fi
| Field | What it does | Unit / default |
|---|---|---|
| Active | Turns the Wi-Fi interface on or off. | — |
| SSID | Name of the Wi-Fi network the controller joins. | text |
| Scan | Searches for Wi-Fi networks in range and lists them under Wifi networks with BSSID, ESSID and Signal quality. Click a row to copy its name into SSID. | — |
| Password | Password of the Wi-Fi network. Empty = open network without encryption. | text |
| Type | DHCP or STATIC, with IP, Netmask and Gateway as for Ethernet. | DHCP |
| Network isolation | As for Ethernet. | Active |
From the factory, the Wi-Fi module runs as an access point, so you can connect a laptop to the controller. The Type field is then empty. Any Save on this page, on any tab, switches Wi-Fi to client mode: the controller tries to join the network in SSID and the access point disappears. If you are connected through that access point, your session ends. Set up a wired connection or the Wi-Fi client settings first, and save only when you can reach the controller over that connection.
Mobile
Shown only on controllers with a mobile module and SIM card. The tab opens with a single switch; the fields below appear when you set it to Active.
| Field | What it does | Unit / default |
|---|---|---|
| Active | Turns the mobile connection on or off. | Inactive |
| PIN | PIN of the SIM card. Empty if the SIM has no PIN. | text |
| APN | Access point name of the mobile operator. | text |
| Username, Password | Login data from the mobile operator. Used only when both are filled in. | text |
| Dial-up number | Number used to open the data connection. | *99# |
| Check signal quality | Reads the signal from the modem and shows RSSI in dBm and a Condition: Marginal (−95 dBm or weaker), OK (up to −85 dBm), Good (up to −75 dBm), Excellent (stronger). | dBm |
| Check SIM status | Shows the state of the SIM card, for example "SIM detected. Unlocked and ready.", "SIM detected. Locked with PIN.", "SIM detected. PIN locked. Unlock manually with PUK." or "Unable to detect SIM". | — |
Each save with a wrong PIN can use up one of the SIM's PIN attempts. After too many wrong attempts the SIM is locked and needs the PUK. Check the PIN before you activate the mobile connection.
DNS server
| Field | What it does | Unit / default |
|---|---|---|
| Preferred DNS server | First DNS server for interfaces set to STATIC. | IPv4 · 8.8.8.8 |
| Alternate DNS server | Second DNS server for interfaces set to STATIC. | IPv4 · 1.1.1.1 |
Interfaces set to DHCP use the DNS servers handed out by the network. If both fields are empty, the controller uses 8.8.8.8 and 1.1.1.1.
Proxy server
| Field | What it does | Unit / default |
|---|---|---|
| Http proxy host | Address of the HTTP proxy the site requires for internet access. Empty = no proxy. | host or IP · empty |
| Http proxy port | Port of the proxy. | 8080 |
The cloud connection goes through the proxy when one is set.
Network redundancy
Network redundancy keeps the controller online when one connection fails. The controller pings a test address over each connection and uses the working connection with the highest priority.
| Field | What it does | Unit / default |
|---|---|---|
| Active | Turns failover on or off. When off, the controller prefers wired connections, then Wi-Fi, then mobile, without testing them. | Inactive |
| Ping IP | Address pinged to check that a connection still reaches the internet. Must be a valid IP address. | IPv4 · 8.8.8.8 |
| Ping interval | Time between two tests of a connection. | s · 60 |
| Ping retry | Maximum number of pings sent per test. | 3 |
| Number of ping replays for successful test | Replies needed for a connection to count as working. Keep it at or below Ping retry. | 2 |
| Ping timeout | Time to wait for one reply before the ping counts as lost. | ms · 5000 |
| Priority | Order of the connections, from Highest to Lowest. Drag a row up or down to change it. | WAN, LAN, Wi-Fi, Mobile |
The connection in the Lowest row is not tested. The controller falls back to it when all the other connections fail. Put your backup connection, usually Mobile, there.
3 Emergency Wi-Fi hotspot
Use the hotspot when the controller cannot be reached over the network, for example after a wrong static address.
Reduxi 0001. Connect a laptop or phone to it.http://192.168.10.1 in a browser and log in.The hotspot switches off by itself after 1 hour and after a restart of the controller. After you press the button, it cannot be triggered again for 3 minutes.
4 Checklist
- Internet connection shows a green tick.
- Active connection is the connection you expect.
- Static addresses, netmask and gateway were checked with the site's IT before saving.
- Network isolation is Active unless the site needs routing through the controller.
- Wi-Fi and Mobile are Active only when they are used.
- With Network redundancy, the main connection is Highest and the backup is Lowest.
- The proxy is set if the site requires one.
