Backup and restore
Save the controller configuration to a file, and load a saved configuration back onto the controller.
→ Overview
A backup is a file with the controller's configuration. Keep a current backup of every site: you need it to undo a failed change, after a factory reset, or to set up a replacement controller quickly.
- Backup downloads the configuration as a file to your computer.
- Restore uploads such a file and replaces the configuration on the controller with it.
Take a backup after commissioning, after every larger change, and always before an update, a restore or a factory reset.
1 Download a backup
reduxi-<Unit ID>-<date-time>.config, for example reduxi-SIMUCDEVDOCS0001-2026-11-03-09-30-00.config.| Element | What it does |
|---|---|
| Download configuration | Creates the backup on the controller and downloads it. The date and time in the file name are the controller's time when the backup was made. The download is recorded in the Audit log. |
The file can contain the settings of the network (including Wi-Fi and mobile passwords), the cloud connection, MQTT and Open VPN. Treat it like a password: do not send it by e-mail to third parties and do not store it in a shared folder.
2 Restore a backup
Restoring replaces all data and settings on the controller with the content of the backup. The current configuration cannot be brought back unless you have a backup of it. During the restore the controller stops controlling devices and all connections drop.
.config backup.| Element | What it does | Default |

| Upload file | The backup file to restore. Required; without it the page shows "Please, select file". | — |
| Cloud connection | Ticked: the cloud connection settings are taken from the backup. | not ticked |
| Mqtt connection | Ticked: the MQTT v3 connector settings are taken from the backup. | not ticked |
| Network | Ticked: the network settings (Ethernet, Wi-Fi, mobile, DNS, proxy, redundancy) are taken from the backup. | not ticked |
| Open VPN | Ticked: the Open VPN configuration is taken from the backup. | not ticked |
| All data and settings will be deleted and cannot be restored! | Confirmation. Restore works only when it is ticked. | not ticked |
| Restore | Uploads the file and, after a final Yes, starts the restore. The restore and the chosen options are recorded in the Audit log. | — |
- Network restores the IP addresses of the backup. If the backup comes from another site or an older address plan, the controller can end up with an address you cannot reach. Tick Network only when you restore onto the same site and network.
- Open VPN restores the VPN identity of the backup. Restoring the VPN configuration of another controller makes both controllers use the same VPN identity, and remote access to one or both of them fails.
- If you work remotely, do not tick Network or Open VPN unless you are sure.
A backup made with newer controller software than the one installed cannot be restored; an Error notification appears and nothing is changed. Update the controller to the same or a newer version first (Settings → System → Update), then restore.
3 After the restore
- You can log in again (users and passwords may have changed to those of the backup).
- The header icons show network and cloud connected.
- Devices and strategies are present and running: check Home and Health check.
- Settings → Network and Open VPN show the expected settings.
- A new backup is stored if the restored configuration was changed afterwards.
